European Commission adopts new rules to reduce the energy consumption of household appliances in standby mode
Have you ever noticed that your TV or computer consumes power even when they are switched off or in ‘standby’ mode? You’re not the only one. Standby appliances in the EU are estimated to be responsible for about 4 TWh of household energy consumption per year, almost double the annual consumption of the island of Malta. This has a negative impact on both consumer bills and the environment.
To reduce this energy consumption, the European Commission has adopted new measures relating to the standby mode of household appliances. The new rules take into account the latest technological and market developments and include products such as routers, Wi-Fi modems and wireless speakers.
As a result of these measures, annual savings of 1.36 million tonnes of CO2-equivalent and total consumer savings of EUR 530 million per year are expected by 2030. In addition, the new rules will make information more accessible on standby power consumptionand on the time it takes for the product to automatically reach this mode.
The new rules have been approved by the Commission, and will be published in the Official Journal of the European Union shortly. After 20 days they will come into force, and manufacturers will have 2 years to fully implement them.
