Solar thermal power is one of the simplest and traditionally most adopted renewable technologies, capturing, storing and using solar energy to produce hot water. It can be used for civil purposes (air conditioning in the winter and sanitary uses) or in industrial processes. To optimise the contribution of renewables and maximise energy and economic savings, it is important to consider a few key points: choice of the most suitable technology according to use and location (e.g. flat or vacuum systems, natural or forced circulation); correct sizing of the system in terms of capturing surfaces, orientation, storage capacity and operating logic; interfacing and correct integration with existing systems. It is thus essential to rely on people who can offer specific expertise, who know how to design, build, manage and maintain installations in such a way as to ensure their long life and constant savings over time.

The current trend towards the electrification of consumption is helping with the spread of alternatives to combustion generation systems, such as heat pumps and hybrid systems. Heat pumps are devices that use electricity to transfer heat from an external source (air, groundwater, waste heat, etc.) to an indoor setting, partially or totally satisfying the needs for space heating or cooling and/or the production of domestic or industrial hot water. If they are designed, built and operated correctly, these systems can be more efficient than traditional systems, especially if they are integrated with renewable sources, enabling part of the electricity needed to run the heat pumps to be self-produced on site.

Simultaneous production of electricity and heat through reliable and widely deployed technologies may prove to be a winning formula for distributed generation dedicated to self-consumption, providing the conditions for its proper deployment are met. Cogeneration systems, such as endothermic engines or gas turbines, can produce electricity by recovering the 'waste' heat generated during transformation. This heat can be used for a variety of applications, such as domestic hot water production or high-temperature process use, depending on temperature levels and the heat-carrying fluid. The complexity of the technology in question and the initial investment costs require the correct sizing of the system, assisted by models to simulate the energy balance. In order to construct facilities that operate under optimal working conditions while maximising energy, economic and environmental savings, a correct engineering phase is therefore required. This stage requires: characterisation of the heat load, in terms of quantity and temperature levels; choosing the most suitable technology according to the application; estimating energy and economic savings compared with separate production; evaluating incentives on the market (HEC white certificates, tax deductions, regional calls, etc.); drawing up a draft business plan. To maximise savings, the lighting system can also be equipped with an advanced dimming system. This system can regulate the switching on of light sources and modulate their brightness thanks to ad hoc sensors, such as presence detectors or illuminance meters. The Ecobonus is a measure introduced by the Ministry for Economic Development, and is aimed at all taxpayers. Tax deductions are offered to provide a very advantageous incentive for energy upgrading. This measure makes it possible to deduct from personal income tax (Irpef) or corporate income tax (Ires) a part of the expenses incurred to raise energy efficiency in existing buildings. The deduction is spread over 10 yearly instalments of equal amounts. The Conto Termico is an instrument that offers incentives for actions to raise energy efficiency and produce thermal energy from renewable sources for small-scale plants. Beneficiaries: Public administrations; Businesses (e.g. condominiums and subjects receiving income from business or farming); Private concerns (e.g. individuals) Those eligible may use incentives directly or act through a certified ESCo (Energy Service Company). As an ESCo with UNI CEI 11352 certification, SGR Efficienza Energetica can help you to bring your energy needs into the future. There is available funding of EUR 900 million a year, 200 million of which set aside for Public Administrations for carrying out one or more of the actions set out in article 4(2) of the Decree. With the Conto Termico, buildings can be upgraded, and their energy performance improved, with a reduction in energy needs and related costs, making the intervention economically viable.
